The owner of the vessel STAVANGER has compensated more than 36.5 million hryvnias for damages caused by palm oil pollution of the water area of the Pivdenny seaport in Odesa.
The accident occurred in the spring of 2020, during which about 8.5 tons of palm oil got into the sea, reports State Inspection on Telegram.
The message noted that the release of a mixture of palm olein and stearin, which occurred during the unloading of the ship, is capable of creating danger for both people and marine animals and plants.
Eco-inspectors calculated more than 65.17 million hryvnias in damages ($2,416,557 as of 04/30/2020) from the pollution of inland sea waters. However, the ship owner ignored the claim for voluntary payment.
The message noted that the Odesa Regional Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit with the Commercial Court of Odesa Oblast.
"In July 2022, the above-mentioned court issued a decision, by which it was decided to collect from the owner of the vessel STAVANGER in favor of the state the damages caused to the environment. The appeal also remained unsatisfied", pre-service notes.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the crew of the foreign vessel IRON DESTINY dumped economic and fecal wastewater in the water area of the Pivdenny seaport.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, the prosecutor's office through the court collected more than 16,000 dollars from the ship-owning company of the Delfi cargo tanker that sank in Odesa for damages due to pollution of the Black Sea by oil products during an accident.
