Students have repeatedly asked teachers to stop abusing animals

In Kyiv, a teacher from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the National University of Bioresources and Nature Management (NUBiP) was accused of torturing animals during practical classes.

He demonstrated on a live rabbit the mechanisms of reflex respiratory arrest under the influence of ammonia without anesthesia, the animal welfare organization URSA reported on Facebook.

The message emphasized that Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Protection of Animals from Cruelty" prohibits the holding of animal demonstrations for educational purposes, if they can be held on inanimate objects. In particular, this refers to the demonstration of reflex activity of the body.

Animal rights activists emphasized that, according to students, they repeatedly asked teachers to stop abusing animals.

"Even the textbooks state that all research on living beings should be conducted under anesthesia, which teachers do not follow and regularly torture animals for experiments," they said.

It is noted that the teachers refused the students arguing that this is the only way to learn. It is also contrary to the provisions of the law, which provides for the replacement of classes if students request it.

"In EU countries, students can master the material without causing suffering to living beings, but not in Ukraine? The constant unjustified torture of animals under the guise of "education and science" must be stopped," animal rights activists emphasized.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Supreme Court upheld the decisions of previous courts regarding the acquittal of the notorious doghunter Oleksiy Svyatogor, who was accused of advocating cruelty to dogs. The court decided that the phrase "propaganda of a cult of violence and cruelty" describes exclusively relationships between people and does not extend to statements about animals.
