Ukraine wants to tighten control over fertilizer use: government approves draft law

The document will allow regulating the circulation of fertilizers in order to reduce risks for the environment

The Cabinet of Ministers has supported the draft law "On Plant Protection Products and Fertilizers," which will tighten control over pesticides to European standards.

The document is part of Ukraine's European integration commitments, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the bill will help introduce modern approaches and mechanisms for controlling the circulation of pesticides and fertilizers on the Ukrainian market.

The document establishes requirements for:

  • mandatory assessment and approval of drug components, without which substances will not be admitted to the market;
  • determination of the lists of substances that are forbidden to be used as part of plant protection products;
  • introduction of European labeling and informing consumers about the properties and safety of drugs;
  • identification and tracking of drugs. That is, each drug will be marked with a special code for tracking the place of its production, use and waste management (container);
  • regulating the circulation of fertilizers – introducing a procedure for evaluating the compliance of fertilizers with established standards in order to reduce risks for the environment.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in July 2023 The Cabinet of Ministers approved the Procedure for maintaining the State register of pesticides and agrochemicals.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Ternopil region almost 17 tons of unusable pesticides that posed a threat of environmental pollution were sent for disposal.
