The alliance will help to avoid replacing dependence on Russian fossil fuels with new ones

The European Commission approved the establishment of the new solar photovoltaic industry alliance (Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance), which will contribute to accelerating the introduction of solar energy and increasing the sustainability of Europe's energy system.

European Commissioner Thierry Breton said this would help achieve 30 GW of annual solar power generation capacity by 2025, reports European Commission.

The message noted that the Alliance would help to expand production technologies of innovative solar photovoltaic products and components. It is one of the specific initiatives of the "EU Solar Energy Strategy", which was adopted in May 2022 as part of the REPowerEU plan. The plan will help the EU achieve more than 320 GW of newly installed solar PV capacity by 2025 and almost 600 GW by 2030.

" Today's approval paves the way for the publication of the call for membership in the Alliance in November," the press service of the European Commission explained.

Breton also emphasized that the Alliance is designed to help Europe's green transition and avoid replacing dependence on Russian fossil fuels with new dependencies. In addition, it will contribute to the development of innovative industry in Europe and the creation of new jobs.

The announcement noted that the Alliance will bring together industry representatives, research institutes, consumer associations, non-governmental organizations and other interested parties. He will present an action plan for the solar industrial value chain in Europe.

In addition, the Alliance will ensure cooperation between the EU and member states in the following areas:

  • research;
  • innovations;
  • technologies;
  • industrial supply chain, in particular raw materials;
  • access to financing, buyers, international partnership;
  • sustainability, in particular of the global supply chain;
  • circularity;
  • skills

"The launch of the Solar Photovoltaic Industry Alliance is expected by the end of the year. The commission will work with EITInnoEnergy to create it, building on the successful experience of the Battery Alliance," the statement said.

The press service also emphasized that similar industrial alliances played an important role. Thus, the Battery Alliance helped create the conditions for the EU to meet up to 90% of its demand for batteries produced in Europe by 2030. And the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance is increasing hydrogen production capacity in the unit.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that senior researcher of the Wilfrid Martens Center for European Studies in Brussels Dimitar Lilkov, who called EU climate and energy strategy alarmingly bipolar.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the EU plans to create a new hydrogen bank European Hydrogen Bank, which invests €3 billion in the development of the H2 market.
