Russian aggression caused at least 33 million tons of carbon emissions

At the COP27 Climate Summit, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Ruslan Strilets, called on international partners to support Ukraine's initiative to launch the Global Platform for Environmental Damage Assessment as a result of war.

After all, armed aggression destroys the environment not only in Ukraine, it affects the entire planet and exacerbates the problem of global warming, reports Ministry of Environment on Telegram.

He noted that the priorities of the environmental sphere of Ukraine are overcoming the consequences of the war and green recovery.

The creation of an international platform for cooperation was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi in an address to the COP27 participants.

The shooter also spoke in detail about the devastating consequences of a full-scale Russian invasion.

"Forests, rivers, subsoil, soil, air – there is no ecosystem that has not suffered devastating consequences. The whole of Ukraine is talking about it today, the main Climate Summit of the year is talking about it, the whole world is talking about it. We registered more than 2,200 Russian environmental crimes on the territory of our state. Damage to our environment already amounts to more than 38 billion euros, and every day of the war increases this amount. And the direct damage to the climate as a result of Russian aggression is at least 33 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere", he said.

The message noted that the Global Platform is expected to become a platform for international expert cooperation. Within its framework, unified approaches to determining damage to the environment and climate as a result of armed conflicts will be developed. Ukrainian methods developed by the Ministry of Environment will be the basis of such work.

"I urge you to support Ukraine and not be afraid of a terrorist state. To be afraid of Russia means to stay in the backyard of history. There is no place for silent witnesses in the civilized world. I am sure that now our country has even more fans on the world stage", Strilets emphasized.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi during his speech at COP27 said that there can be no effective climate policy without peace, after all, nations seek to protect themselves from existing threats created, in particular, by the aggression of the Russian Federation.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Grechanyk said that Ukraine has appealed to the UN, EU members and the Council of Europe to create a specialized international tribunal for consideration of crimes of the Russian Federation.
