Liquidation of landfills belongs to the powers of local authorities

During an inspection of the territory within the city of Zhytomyr, environmental inspectors of the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Polissia District found an unauthorized landfill located near Aviatoriv Street.

This was reported by the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Polissia District on Facebook.

The Inspectorate responded to this situation by sending a letter to the Zhytomyr City Council demanding that it make a decision and take the necessary measures to eliminate the illegal landfill, in accordance with the requirements of Article 12 of the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management".

Article 26(2) of the Law of Ukraine "On Waste Management" stipulates that the powers of executive bodies of village, town and city councils in the field of waste management include, among others: organization of household waste management, construction and demolition waste; ensuring elimination of unauthorized landfills within settlements; organization of separate household waste collection points; provision of information, explanatory and educational work among the population on waste management

As EcoPolitics previously reported, prosecutors of the Terebovlya District Prosecutor's Office went to court to recover compensation of more than UAH 5 million from the local government for the damage and land pollution caused.
