In Vinnytsia, the City Council approved the Concept for the Development of Small Rivers until 2035 in order to improve their condition and make the banks a recreation area.
This will be part of the implementation of the community's "Green" course until 2030 in the direction of preserving biodiversity, the Vinnytsia City Council reports.
It is noted that there are 64 small rivers in the city, and the adopted document is a strategic tool.
"It is important to understand the value of these small rivers," said Mayor Serhii Morgunov. "Small rivers are the arteries that feed the Southern Bug. Therefore, their condition also depends on the quality of the water, the ability to swim in the summer and to relax. Also on the basis of these rivers there are real opportunities to create good recreational areas. After all, any river provides coolness in the heat, so we have to take care of our water resources."
The report said that the Concept provides for the transformation of small rivers into functional natural spaces in different areas of the city, which will improve the ecological condition. For this, it is necessary to change management approaches to more sustainable ones and integrate them into the urban space and the lives of residents.
It is noted that the project will have four aspects, namely:
- ecological;
- social;
- spatial;
- administrative.
The message emphasized that small rivers are an integral part of the Vinnytsia urban ecosystem and create unique landscapes. This is an invaluable natural resource that cannot be fully restored if lost.
The concept assumes that all future plans and projects should bring the urban river ecosystem closer to:
- good water condition;
- preservation of local biodiversity;
- creation of accessible, safe and inclusive spaces on shores.
"Vinnytsia continues to maintain the status of the most comfortable city to live in, and ecology is one of the indicators by which our city leads among Ukrainian cities," the press service emphasized.
Earlier, Ecopolitic wrote, that in January 2022 Vinnytsia urban territorial community is the first in Ukraine, which announced the Green course within the framework of the European Green Deal (EGD).
As EcoPolitic previously reported, Ukraine will launch a large international project for solving the problems of the Tisza River, in particular environmental.
