Significant excesses of the content of toxic substances were found in the air of Kyiv

Katerina Belousova

Specialists of the observatory analyzed 1461 air samples

The average daily maximum permissible concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air in Kyiv was found to be 2.3 times higher than the average daily maximum permissible concentration.

Compared to the previous week, the content of formaldehyde slightly decreased, while sulfur dioxide slightly increased, according to the weekly air pollution report from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the observatory, the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of nitrogen dioxide was exceeded by the average daily content:

  • 2.2 times – on Halytskyi Square (November 30);
  • 1.3-1.9 times – on Demiivska and Bessarabska squares, Beresteyski and Obolonski avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Akademik Strazheska, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavlo Polubotka and Kaunaska streets;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily content of sulfur dioxide:

  • 1.6-2.3 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska and Halytska squares, Beresteyski and Obolonski avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Akademik Strazheska, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavla Polubotka and Kaunaska streets ;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • in 1.1-1.5 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska and Halytska squares, Beresteyski and Obolonski avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Oleksandr Dovzhenka and Kaunaska streets.

Specialists of the observatory selected and analyzed 1461 atmospheric air sample from 14 stationary posts.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, scientists found that elderly people living in cities with polluted air have lower cognitive abilities compared to residents of cities where environmental programs are implemented, because their brains degrade from polluted air.
