Mariupol to start producing green steel 3 years after the victory

"Metinvest" has already joined the "Mariupol Reborn" project, within the framework of which the city's development strategy is being developed, in particular the industrial

Yuriy Ryzhenkov, general director of the Metinvest group, said that the destroyed Azovstal and MMKI enterprises in Mariupol will be rebuilt practically from scratch using new green technologies.

He told about this in an interview for the FAQ talks project, adding that the restoration of enterprises will last from three to five years, the press service of Metinvest reports.

Ryzhenkov explained that after the Second World War, the first furnace in Mariupol was started six months after the liberation, and at the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant – after four. However, enterprises do not plan to restore using old technologies.

"We have no desire to restore the old technology that existed at the Ilyich and Azovstal MMK, because it is already yesterday. Today, the whole world is moving towards green metallurgy, towards electrometallurgy, and the restoration of our plants in Mariupol will take place in this direction", he emphasized, adding that the restoration of production using new green technologies will take more time

According to him, although the damage to the enterprises is serious, after the deoccupation, it will probably be possible to restore some production at Azovstal. However, the details will become known only after the engineers survey the city and the factories. This will make it possible to adjust plans for the recovery of the city's economy.

Ryzhenkov emphasized that recovery will be needed not only in Mariupol, but also in Crimea and the entire east of Ukraine, in particular Luhansk and Donetsk, where there are also metallurgical facilities.

He said that the company has already joined the "Mariupol Reborn" project, within the framework of which the city's development strategy, in particular the industrial one, is being developed. Currently, "Metinvest" is the main partner in creating the design of the future city, and later it will be the main partner in reconstruction.

"Nowadays Azovstal is a symbol, it is a fortress. Therefore, we will have to understand what part of metallurgy should remain in Mariupol, what it will look like, and what the so-called industrial map of the city should look like. And only then start rebuilding the city, Ryzhenkov noted. "It will be a modern city with a developed economy."

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Metinvest group announced its intention to produce green steel at its rebuilt factories in Mariupol and Avdiivka, in Donetsk region, after the deoccupation.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the creation of new green steel factories in Ukraine, in particular during post-war recovery, will help the industry get rid of part of indirect emissions Scope 3.
