Three times higher levels of toxic substances in the air found in Kyiv

Specialists of the observatory analyzed 1403 air samples

During the week of February 19-24, the average daily maximum permissible concentration of nitrogen dioxide was found to be 3.4 times higher than the average daily maximum permissible concentration.

Compared to the previous week, the content of nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide increased, according to the weekly air pollution report from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the observatory, the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of nitrogen dioxide was exceeded by the average daily content:

  • 3.0-3.4 times – on Bessarabska and Halytska squares, Obolonski and Beresteyski avenues, Hetman Pavla Polubotka, Kaunaska and Sklyarenko streets (February 22-24);
  • 1.6-2.3 times – on Lesya Ukrainka Boulevard, in the Hydropark district, Oleksandr Dovzhenka and Inzhener Borodin streets;
  • 1.3 times – on Nauka Avenue (February 24) .

Exceeding the MPC by average daily content of sulfur dioxide:

  • 1.5-2.6 times – on Bessarabska and Halytskaya squares, Beresteyskyi and Obolonskyi avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavlo Polubotka, Inzhener Borodin, Kaunaska and Semyon Sklyarenko streets ;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • 1.0-2.0 times – on Halytskaya and Bessarabskaya squares, Beresteyskyi and Obolonskyi avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Oleksandr Dovzhenka, Hetman Pavla Polubotka, Kaunaska and Sklyarenko streets;
  • 1.0 times – on Nauka Avenue (February 22) .

Specialists of the observatory selected and analyzed 1403 atmospheric air samples from 15 stationary posts.

According to forecasts, meteorological conditions for the next 2-3 days will not contribute to the dispersion of harmful impurities in the surface layer of the atmosphere.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, in Kyiv during 87% of the time in 2023, i.e. about 10.5 months, the air quality index, and therefore the level of pollution, was low or very low.
