The list of environmental reforms demanded by the EU from Ukraine has been published

More than 900 EU directives and acts must be implemented into Ukrainian legislation

Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, has named 6 environmental reforms that are a prerequisite for Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

He spoke about environmental reforms as part of the negotiation process in the studio of the Rada TV channel.

The Minister said that as part of the negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU, negotiating chapter 27 "Environment and Climate Change" will be discussed. According to him, this is one of the most difficult chapters because it is cross-sectoral.

According to the results of the national self-screening, the Ministry of Environment identified more than 900 EU directives and acts of law that should be implemented in Ukrainian legislation.

Ruslan Strilets also said that Ukraine has to implement 6 important environmental reforms under the Ukraine Facility. Their implementation is scheduled for 2024-2026. The list of reforms is contained in Chapter 15 "Green Transition and Environmental Protection". They are:

1. Prevention of industrial pollution.

2. Course on climate neutrality.

The Ministry of Environment developed the project of the Strategy for the Formation and Implementation of State Policy in the Field of Climate Change for the Period Until 2035, which has already been approved by the government. The Department is also preparing for adoption by the Verkhovna Rada the draft Law of Ukraine "On the Basic Principles of State Climate Policy".

3. Launch of the greenhouse gas emissions quota market.

Specialists of the Ministry of Environment have developed a strategy for trading greenhouse gas emissions. The Cabinet of Ministers claims that it will become a road map for the implementation of the system of trading quotas for greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in Ukraine.

4. Combating illegal deforestation.

"We are showing the already introduced tools for electronic accounting of wood, where we can see almost transparently today what is happening with wood," said the minister.

5. Waste management and the transition to a circular economy.

6. Environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that on June 20 The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted as a basis the project of the European integration Law "On integrated prevention and control of industrial pollution" No. 11355, and on June 25, the day the EU accession negotiations began, the government approved the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) until 2030.
