Large accumulations of algae have been observed on the Black Sea coast, washed ashore by the waves. An inspection is underway to check for hazardous substances.

This was reported by the South-Western District State Environmental Inspectorate on social media.

Specialists note that this is a seasonal phenomenon caused by rising sea temperatures; however, pollutants that may have entered the sea can also contribute to the algal blooms.

State inspectors are investigating the cause of the bloom and the change in water color in the Black Sea. They have taken water samples within Odesa, where the largest accumulations of algae have been observed.

The Environmental Inspectorate reports that the results of the water quality study will be published after the laboratory analysis is completed.

As EkoPolityka previously reported, the water in the Dnipro River acquired an emerald hue due to an increased amount of algae.
