Court forces Sumy resident to pay a huge fine for logging in a nature reserve shutterstock

In Sumy region, a court has ordered a black logger to pay UAH 782,700 in compensation for cutting down trees in the Seimsky Regional Landscape Park in Konotop district.

The court's decision came into force on March 12, the State Environmental Inspectorate in Sumy Oblast reported on Facebook.

It is noted that the relevant lawsuit was filed by specialists from the Konotop District Prosecutor's Office and the State Environmental Inspectorate. The court found the offender guilty of committing a criminal offense under Part 4 of Article 246 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him in July 2023.

"According to the court's decision, citizen V. must compensate for the damages in the amount of UAH 782,749," the statement said.

The press service said that the deforestation was discovered in November 2022.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that employees of the Ilyinsky Yarmarok municipal enterprise cut down 6 trees in the Romensky Park, a local landscape art monument. This park is an object of the nature reserve fund.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, seven heads of agro-forestry enterprises and the former deputy director general of the regional utility Sumyoblagrolis were served with a notice of suspicion in Sumy region for selling forests for UAH 11 million.
