Four water channels exceed the permitted volume of discharges by 2.5 million m3

Environmental inspectors have found that all seven water utilities in Kyiv region discharge wastewater into the Ros River and its tributaries in excess of the maximum permissible discharges of pollutants.

Such violations were discovered during an inspection of enterprises that may affect the Ros River, the State Ecological Inspectorate of the Capital District reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the Ros provides drinking water to 10 cities and towns and several hundred villages in four regions. There are four drinking water supply companies in its basin, three of which are in Kyiv region.

The press service said that the volume of discharges in excess of the standards set in the special water use permit from only four water utilities is 2.5 million m3. And this figure will continue to grow. Environmental inspectors also found that:

  • 2 water utilities do not keep primary records of water at water intake facilities, that is, they do not have meters;
  • 4 water utilities do not record the amount of discharged return (waste) water.

"Taking into account the results of the inspections, the Ministry of Environment and the Interdepartmental Working Group will develop an action plan to save the Ros River," the message emphasized.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Interagency Working Group (IWG) on the development of a plan for the rehabilitation and restoration of the Ros River held a meeting to identify the main environmental problems of the river to develop a project to save it.
