Cooling equipment runs on propane and carbon dioxide

The Silpo supermarket chain is actively modernizing its branches, making them more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Over the course of a year, the company has installed solar power stations (SPS) on the roofs of ten more assets and is gradually replacing refrigeration equipment with more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Silpo representatives announced this at the EuroShop 2026 exhibition in Düsseldorf, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine.

At the end of 2024, only three branches in the chain had their own SES. By the end of 2025, this figure had grown to 13.

New cooling equipment has been installed in 34 stores since the beginning of 2022. The total number of stores with new refrigerators now stands at 44. In addition to energy efficiency, it also has less impact on the environment. The equipment runs on climate-friendly refrigerants – carbon dioxide (CO₂) and propane (R290).

As an example of "green" architecture, the company cites its Silpo Re Cycling supermarket in Kyiv. It was built with EBRD funds. In February 2022, the branch received a BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) green building certificate.

“This supermarket consumes 80% less energy, as it is equipped with a solar power plant and a geothermal heat pump,” noted "Silpo."

According to the report, the company began a gradual transition to more environmentally friendly and efficient refrigeration equipment in 2023. The chain also added that all new stores are equipped with systems operating on carbon dioxide and propane.

“All our stores have generators, solar power plants, and Starlink to offer guests high-speed internet and access to electricity, and now, when it is very cold, we treat our guests to hot tea,” was emphasised at the presentation.

EcoPolitic previously reported that the agricultural holding Kernel installs mini-SPPs on the roofs of trucks to reduce fuel consumption and also uses biomass from husks for oil production.
