In the Rivne region, the city of Dubno, the first in Ukraine, switched the entire heating system from natural gas to alternative fuels, namely wood chips, pellets, peat briquettes and peat chips.

Mayor Vasyl Antoniuk said that this will allow to reduce carbon emissions by an average of 37%, compared to the planned 30%, and for individual boiler houses this indicator will reach 48.5%, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

"This season, we already have all the city's heating on alternative types. This is, first of all, wood chips, as well as pellets, peat briquettes, peat briquettes. For this purpose, we converted five of the city's eight boiler houses to biofuel. In Dubno, this project cost approximately 25 million UAH. Taking into account the real cost of natural gas, it will pay off in three to four years," he said.

He also said that the project was conceived about four years ago, to save budget funds due to the increase in natural gas prices.

Antoniuk also emphasized that the city has not given up gas communications. After all, if the temperature drops to 20-25 degrees, you will have to connect gas, which will allow you to maintain the mode of operation of the network.

He also said that the city is implementing a project of comprehensive thermal modernization of educational institutions on 1.3 million, of which 700,000 was provided by the European Union, and 600,000 is the city budget.

The article noted that Dubno is part of the "Agreement of Mayors" movement regarding climate and energy conservation at the local level. It unites 11,000 local and regional authorities from 55 countries. Currently, about 40,000 people live in the city.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in the Rivne region, residents of the Volodymyretsk community will be able to save on energy resources, reduce the amount of garden waste, and also simplify their disposal. Such garbage can become fuel for a central boiler room.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, economic consultant Vadym Novikov said that for Ukraine replacement of natural gas with biomass waste is the easiest and cheapest way to get rid of dependence on Russian gas.
