Gaps in windows and doors cause approximately 15-25% of heat loss

Specialists of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving have prepared for Ukrainians life hacks and tips on energy efficiency that are used all over the world.

The largest part of the heat from the house is lost in three ways: through doors and windows, through the roof and through external walls, the State Energy Efficiency Agency reports on Facebook.

To avoid such losses, they should be insulated. Also, comprehensive home insulation can save up to 40% of heating costs.

Practical tips on energy efficiency:

  • check the condition of the windows in each room, because up to 10% of heat is lost through old, non-energy-saving windows;
  • installation of modern energy-saving double-glazed windows will help save heat and, if there is a heat meter, save money;
  • check the heating system and radiators, as well as consult with a specialist;
  • if possible, install a heat energy meter, thermostatic regulators on heating radiators to control the temperature;
  • seal gaps in windows and doors, because they can account for approximately 15-25% of heat loss;
  • close gaps in window frames with special tape, foam or rubberized sealant;
  • fill the gaps in the places where the window sill is attached with mounting foam or silicone sealant;
  • tightly closed windows and doors will reduce drafts, which are a major source of heat loss;
  • thick carpets on the floor will also reduce heat consumption;
  • a window covered with thick curtains on cloudy, windy days and at night will also reduce heat loss. However, they should be opened in sunny weather so that the house is heated naturally.

As EcoPolitic reported  before, energy expert Hennadiy Ryabtsev compiled a list of advice for Ukrainians living in multi-apartment buildings with centralized heating, which will help inexpensively prepare for the difficult winter period.
