In August, 9,074 electric cars were sold in Ukraine, which is 7.8 per cent more than in the previous month. And although Chinese models continue to lead the way among imported new cars, overall, the highest sales in the electric car segment are for tried-and-tested Western models and one Japanese model.
EcoPolitics has compiled an overview of the best-selling models based on data from the Automotive Market Research Institute.
Following a sharp slump caused by the reintroduction of VAT payments during customs clearance, the market is gradually recovering. However, compared with August 2025, the difference remains significant — 20.7 per cent.
All market sectors recorded month-on-month growth: domestic resales rose by 2.3 per cent, imports of used cars by 13.7 per cent, and imports of new cars by 27.9 per cent. The number of electric car registrations in these segments stood at 4,957, 3,613 and 504 vehicles respectively.

The top five
Each sector has its own sales leader. On the domestic market, the Nissan Leaf EV was the most frequently purchased model, whilst used Tesla Model Ys and new BYD Sea Lion 06s were the most commonly imported from abroad.
However, if we combine the number of registrations, the picture looks like this:
We must emphasise that the specifications may vary significantly depending on the model and year of manufacture.
5th place — Renault Zoe (333 cars)
A compact city hatchback from the French car manufacturer, which has been in production since 2012. Depending on the model, it can travel between 150 and 390 km on a single charge. Its top speed is up to 135 km/h.
4th place — Volkswagen e-Golf (334 cars)
This electric car is also a city hatchback, this time from a German manufacturer. Production began in 2014. The electric car’s top speed is 150 km/h. It can travel up to 230 km on a single charge.
3rd place — Tesla Model Y (910 cars)
It is a 5- or 7-seater crossover. Depending on the model, it can travel up to 567 km on a single charge. Its top speed is up to 240 km/h.
2nd place — Tesla Model 3 (1,044 cars)
An electric saloon with a range of between 350 and 600+ km, depending on the model. The car can reach a top speed of 261 km/h.
1st place — Nissan Leaf (1,087 cars)
A popular front-wheel-drive hatchback with a range of between 150 and 350 km. Sales began in Japan in 2010.
EcoPolitics previously reported that the proportion of electric cars in Ukraine in August showed an increase across all categories, with the largest rise seen among new passenger cars. By contrast, the proportion of petrol and diesel cars fell slightly.
