In Zhytomyr Oblast, the court ordered a resident of the Korosten district to pay 1.1 million hryvnias for contamination of 0.8 hectares of communal land with chemicals.

Excessive accumulation of heavy metals was found in the soil and groundwater, which lead to irreversible changes, reports Zhytomyr Regional Prosecutor's Office.

The report said that in 2021, the man set up a warehouse of metal and plastic containers from chemical waste in his own yard in the village of Kupishche.

"While cleaning the containers, the man drained the remains of harmful substances outside the household, on the land of communal property," the press service explained.

It is noted that prosecutors in the interests of the state appealed to the court with a claim for compensation for the damage caused. They proved a violation of the requirements of Law No. 962-IV "On Land Protection". The court satisfied the claim in full.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in the Ternopil region, prosecutors have started a pre-trial investigation into the contamination of former farm lands by expired pesticides in the Kremenets district. Some of the hazardous waste is in the open for a long time without any packaging

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Zhytomyr region, eco-inspectors discovered contamination of the territory of the Ovrutsk community with woodworking waste (sawdust) from the branch "Ovrutsk Specialized Forestry", which caused damage of more than 1.5 million hryvnias. An excess of exchangeable ammonium, sulfates, and chlorides was found in the soil.
