Wild grapes, ivy, climbing roses, wisteria, and other climbing plants in Lviv are now listed in a special register. It includes more than 300 vertical greening objects. The register will allow for the preservation of such plants during the restoration or repair of buildings.
The decision was made by the Lviv City Council.
Reason for protecting urban "vines"
The city does not have a separate procedure for protecting vertical greening objects. Therefore, the city authorities do not have the tools to protect such plants from destruction.
"When such an object is removed, the Administrative and Technical Management Department is unable to draw up a report and impose a fine. But if there is a register, it will set a precedent for drawing up reports on violations of beautification rules," said Halyna Mykytchak, head of the Ecology and Natural Resources Department of the Lviv City Council.
The registry data will be taken into account when issuing various types of urban planning documentation, in particular, facade finishing passports, urban planning conditions, and restrictions. Also, when performing repair work, restoration, or reconstruction of structures, the contractor will be obliged to preserve the "vines" and help them recover.
Impact on the urban climate and aesthetics
There is a belief that climbing plants cause an increase in wall moisture, which in turn leads to the destruction of structures. However, the Lviv authorities call this a myth and are seeking to debunk it with their decision.
According to the head of the eco-management department, tree-like vines and climbing plants in general are an important aid in strengthening Lviv's climate resilience. Such plants:
- naturally cool buildings;
- increase the city's greenery;
- help boost biodiversity in densely built-up areas;
- enhance the aesthetic appeal of urban spaces.
EcoPolitic previously reported that, to combat city overheating, Lviv plans to green parking lots. The city has approved the number and procedure for placing broad-canopy trees in various types of parking areas.
