Once in the landfill, such hazardous waste poisons the air, water and soil

Kiyan was urged to hand over used batteries, energy-saving lamps and undamaged thermometers in special containers for the collection of hazardous waste.

Such waste can be taken to one of 200 special containers and the nearest one can be found using an online map, reports Kyiv Commune Service .

The message emphasized that thermometers and energy-saving lamps should be thrown away only in their packaging or wrapped in paper to avoid their damage.

The authors explained that such hazardous waste causes significant damage to the environment and poisons air, water and soil.

"In landfills, under the influence of atmospheric factors, power elements, mercury lamps, are quickly destroyed, and the substances that are in their composition evaporate and are washed away. These wastes are subject to processing and disposal," they emphasized.

It is noted that batteries, lamps and thermometers are subject to safe disposal and become a valuable source of manganese, zinc, graphite, mercury, etc.

The container map is also available by link.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that opened in Kyiv on January 4, 2023 17 points of reception of Christmas trees, where the trees will be chopped into chips and given a second life.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, residents of Rivne in December sent to disposal of 1490 kilograms spent batteries.
