In Ukraine, the share of RES reached 9.8%

But the reason is not the rapid growth of the industry

In the first half of 2024, the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in Ukraine's energy balance increased to 9.8%.

Such data is cited by Forbes Ukraine.

The authors of the article say that in 2023, almost every 10th megawatt of electricity produced in Ukraine was of "green" origin. They are confident that this year there will definitely be more.

But do not rush to rejoice, because the main reason for such a significant increase in the percentage of RES was not the powerful development of renewable energy, but the disabling of 73% of Ukrainian thermal generation by the occupiers only this spring.

Currently, Ukrenergo is developing a model of the future energy system of our country based on RES. The company has set a goal: in 2-3 years, to increase the capacity of wind generation by 5 times, biofuel thermal power plants by 4 times, solar generation by 60%, and also to build 0.8 GW of energy storage systems from scratch.

Forbes Ukraine journalists also compiled the first rating of companies with the largest capacity for producing electricity from renewable sources – wind (WPP), solar (SPP) and hydroelectric power plants (HPP). They were very surprised that DTEK was not in first place.

So, the TOP 3 largest market players look like this:

  1. Elementum Energy – 635 MW of renewable energy capacity (95 MW – wind power plant; 536 MW – solar power plant). Owner – International Fund VR Capital Group.
  2. DTEK RES – 569 MW (114 MW – wind power plants; 447 – SPPs; 7.5 – HPPs). Of these, 498 MW is in the temporarily occupied territories. Owner – Rinat Akhmetov.
  3. Scatec – 336 MW (SPP). Owner – Scatec Solar Netherlands B.V.

Early September, EcoPolitic talked about what Ukraine's new national plan for renewable energy envisages. The government plans increase the share of renewable energy sources in gross final energy consumption to 27% in 2030. We also cited the opinion of Greenpeace International executive director Mads Christensen that Ukraine has the potential to switch to renewable energy sources faster than other countries.
