It ranked 4th among energy sources

In April this year, solar energy set a new world record and for the first time in history generated a tenth of the world's electricity.

Such data is provided by the Ember Energy analytical center.

Experts noted that the amount of energy generated by solar power plants (SPPs) exceeded the generation at all nuclear power plants in the world.

The rapid development of the industry has allowed solar energy to rank fourth among the largest sources of electricity generation in the world, overtaking wind and nuclear power in terms of volume. Only coal, gas, and hydroelectric power plants remain ahead.

According to analysts, over the past 3 years, the SPP generation rate has almost doubled – in April 2022, solar power plants provided only 5.4% of global electricity generation, now this figure has reached 10%.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in 2024, the world produced a record 41% of electricity from clean sources. Also, according to experts from the International Energy Agency, renewable energy sources (RES) and nuclear power will be able to cover the increase in global electricity demand.

Earlier, EcoPolitic reported that China accounts for more than 70% of the current construction of industrial solar and wind power plants in the world – more than 416 GW.
