Every year, the EU spends €12 billion on the fight against invasive species

The European Commission will file an appeal with the European Court of Justice against Bulgaria, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Latvia and Portugal for the spread of invasive (alien) species of plants and animals.

The countries did not comply with the provisions of the regulation on the prevention and management of the appearance and spread of these species on the territory of the EU, DELFI reports.

It is noted that such a regulation includes measures to be taken throughout the EU regarding invasive alien species. And 6 countries have not developed, implemented, or notified the EU of an action plan to prevent the most important ways of the appearance or spread of invasive alien species.

The material explained that alien species are plants and animals that, due to human activity, spread to areas where they do not normally occur. Such species "displace" local residents and cause the loss of biodiversity.

The annual fight against them costs the EU economy €12 billion.

"The fight against invasive species is an important part of the EU's efforts to stop the loss of biodiversity," the authors emphasized.

The problem of invasive species for Ukraine is quite acute, because such species quite common, for example, Sosnovsky's borschivnik. This plant causes skin irritation and burns, quickly adapts to new conditions and displaces local species.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Cabinet of Ministers approved a plan of measures for the implementation of the Biosafety Strategy and biological protection for 2022-2025. It is aimed, in particular, at preventing the spread of alien species on the territory of the country.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, as a result of the destruction of the Irpin Dam, which separated the Irpin River from the Kyiv Reservoir, water flooded the floodplain more than 20 kilometers upstream. It can happen the cause of the spread of invasive species.
