The military tries to take out the garbage on its own whenever possible

Chaotic landfills are appearing in the Kherson region because utility workers cannot get there because of constant Russian shelling.

Ukrainian photographers Konstantin and Vlada Liberov posted this on Instagram.

"16 days in the picturesque nature of the Ukrainian steppe unexpectedly highlighted another problem that is directly related to the war. In addition to endless destruction, pain and death, war is garbage. Huge mountains, tons of garbage. In front-line villages, where enemy artillery regularly arrives, no utility workers arrive, and, let's face it, you can understand them," they report in the post.

Photographers note that in cases where there is an opportunity, the military tries to remove the garbage on its own. Moreover, some crews even started sorting waste. But local residents, according to the usual procedure for villages, burn garbage.

"These chaotic landfills sometimes stretch for hundreds of meters here, among the same picturesque steppes and along the river," the Liberovs write.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the inspectors calculated 34 million hryvniasenvironmental damage from just one of the numerous shellings of Kherson in November 2023.
