Korean technology will help to reduce environmental damage during road repair or construction

For the first time in Ukraine, the innovative EcoSteelAscon eco-technology was used on the Zalissia-Zavorichi highway in Kyiv Oblast.

This was announced by Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Kyiv Regional Road Administration, on his Facebook page.

The EcoSteelAscon technology is based on replacing natural crushed stone with steelmaking slag, a waste product of metallurgical production. The Republic of Korea has been using this technology for 10 years and this method of road construction has proven to be effective.

"We are looking for modern solutions to make the roads in Kyiv region last longer and turn waste into building materials," said Mykola Kalashnyk.

The technology has a number of advantages, such as the durability of the road surface, as the methodology allows to increase the level of road strength. EcoSteelAscon also helps to reduce the cost of laying highways.

The technology also reduces dust and noise levels on the road, and helps to reduce carbon emissions and reduce the environmental footprint. The 750-meter-long section was built by Korean partners at their own expense in a test mode.

"It is important that Ukrainian converter slag has high strength characteristics, which opens up prospects for large-scale implementation of this environmentally friendly technology in road construction throughout Ukraine," said Mykola Kalashnyk.

Ukrainian road specialists from Kyiv region will conduct monthly monitoring of the road surface condition. After monitoring, experts will be able to see how effective this technology will be in Ukrainian conditions. This will determine the further use of EcoSteelAscon in the Kyiv region.

We remind EcoPolitic readers that the Korean company has previously announced that it will help Ukraine build ecological roads. The State Agency for the Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure of Ukraine has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the leading Korean asphalt concrete producer SG in the field of road construction using EcoSteelAscon technology.

Additionally, PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will provide 70 thousand tons of blast furnace slag to the border guards free of charge for the construction of roads along the EU border. Work has already begun on two sections of the border: almost 35 km in Chernivtsi Oblast and 17 km in Zakarpattia Oblast. The plan is to build almost 700 km of border roads.
