This conceptual initiative of the company is aimed at preparing for CBAM and supporting Ukraine's energy sustainability

Dnipro Metallurgical Plant (DMZ) has presented a comprehensive strategy for eco-modernization of production within the framework of the European Green Deal, which includes the construction of renewable energy sources (RES).

This was reported on the official website of the company, which is part of the DCH Steel business group.

The main stages of the strategy of one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in Ukraine are:

  • complete decommissioning of the company's coke and chemical production;
  • construction of an electric arc furnace complex (EAF);
  • transition to renewable energy sources.

The new EAF is already at the design stage.

According to Vitaliy Bash, CEO of DMZ, on May 13, the company completely shut down the coke-chemical site. It is on its basis that they plan to build a solar power plant (SPP). It will consist of double-sided solar panels with high efficiency. This modern equipment can convert both direct solar radiation and reflected solar radiation into electricity.

The planned area of the plant is about 40 hectares. The planned generation volume is expected to be about 40 GWh with an installed capacity of 30 MW. DMZ plans to invest about $15 million in the construction of the SPP.

As part of its new environmental strategy, the plant is considering upgrading the capacity of rolling shop No. 2 (mill 550) and using other types of green energy besides solar.

The company is confident that, along with the construction of the EAF, the decarbonization measures will allow it to produce steel products that meet the environmental standards of the European Union and the requirements of the Carbon Based Import Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

“Overall, we see these initiatives as an important step in the environmental transformation of our company. The development of green energy facilities and the transition to electric steelmaking is a contribution to the future of sustainable metallurgy and to increasing DMZ's competitiveness in the face of current challenges,” says Vitaliy Bash.

Recently, EcoPolitic reported that IDS Ukraine, which produces mineral waters under the Morshynska and Myrhorodska brands, has installed the first solar power plant at its plant in Myrhorod, Poltava region.
