Data centers where video is generated consume energy and water on an industrial scale

Platforms like Sora by Open AI are capable of generating hyper-realistic images. This already raises many ethical issues related to fakes about famous people. However, scientists also pay attention to the environmental consequences of using such technologies.

This is stated in a BBC article with reference to Dr. Kevin Grecksch, a lecturer at Oxford University.

Resource guzzlers

All these videos are generated not on a smartphone or computer, but in data centers. And the more data there is, the more resources are consumed – energy and water to cool the servers. And the virality of such content raises concerns about the scale of such consumption.

According to the BBC, Sora is still the leader on the American Apple App Store, and earlier in less than five days, the application was installed on more than a million devices.

Grecksch urges users to consider the consequences of such content production and consumption and whether it is worth spending so much of nature's resources on AI platforms.

"We just need to think about what we use them for, how we use them, and how often we use them," the scientist emphasized.

Earlier, EcoPolitic reported that gas turbines installed for Elon Musk's AI startup violate state economies.
