Scientists estimate that 20% of the Black Sea dolphin population died

In Ukraine, due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, thousands of dead dolphins washed up on the shores of the Black Sea.

And this is only a small part of the devastating consequences, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi wrote on Telegram.

He emphasized that the Russian war has a huge impact on the nature of Ukraine.

"We estimate that at least 50,000 dolphins died as a result of this war," Ivan Rusev, a biologist at the Tuzlovsk estuaries national nature park, said in the published video.

The video emphasized that 50,000 dolphins make up 20% of their population in the Black Sea. Such actions are defined as ecocide.

Zelenskyi also added that the workers of the Tuzlovsky Lymany National Park are collecting evidence of crimes against nature and intend to bring Russia to justice for ecocide in Ukraine.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that ecologist Ivan Rusev said that dolphins are dying en masse, migration routes of migratory birds are changing, nesting sites of rare species are destroyed in the national natural park "Tuzlivski lymani" in Odesa, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Military actions in the south of Ukraine threaten the internationally important nature conservation areas on the coast of the Black and Azov seas.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the prosecutor's office in the Odesa region opened criminal proceedings on the fact of ecocide, namely, the mass death of dolphins that has been going on for half a year in the Black Sea due to the military aggression of the Russians.
