Landfill fires cause significant damage to the environment and human health

A fire broke out at a landfill near Rivne, probably due to self-ignition of methane landfill gas.

The area of the fire reached more than 300 m2, reports the communal motor vehicle company 1728 on Facebook.

It is noted that the fire was extinguished during the night of July 18, and the fire was contained in the morning. P the fire was intensified by a strong wind, which complicated the extinguishing process. The following were involved in its liquidation:

  • six tankers of the State Emergency Service;
  • tactical robot;
  • 35 rescuers;
  • three local fire brigades;
  • auxiliary equipment and employees of KATP-1728.

"The fire probably started as a result of chemical processes, in particular, the rotting of solid household waste," the report says.

It is noted that earth was brought to the landfill to extinguish the last sources of fire.

Landfill fires cause significant damage to the environment and human health. After all, during the burning of garbage, a number of dangerous substances and carcinogenic compounds are released into the air, including benzopyrene, dioxins, oxides of nitrogen and sulfur, etc.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that near Lutsk in May 2023, a fire occurred at a garbage landfill in the village of Bryshche.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in 2021 near Ternopil rescuers spent two days extinguishing a large-scale fire at a solid waste landfill.
