Firefighters continue to extinguish fires on the island

Yesterday, on September 16, a fire broke out on Khortytsia Island in Zaporizhzhia, where shrubs, dry grass and forest litter caught fire on the territory of Khortytsia.

This was reported by the press service of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Rescuers had difficulty extinguishing the fire because Khortytsia Island has a difficult terrain, which makes it difficult for fire vehicles to pass. Strong winds and heat also contributed to the fire on the island.

The SES engaged 40 rescuers and 9 units of special equipment to extinguish the fire in Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, representatives of Vodokanal and Krutoyarivske forestry helped to extinguish the fire.

As of September 16, at 20:30, firefighters had localized the fire on an area of about 4.5 hectares.

What is known about Khortytsia Island

It is the largest island on the Dnipro River. Its area is about 23.5 square kilometers, which is almost 10% of the territory of the modern city of Zaporizhzhia. The island is 11.2 km long and up to 2.5 km wide. Khortytsia Island is part of the Khortytsia National Reserve and has a protected status.

The EcoPolitic team advises that the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park is gradually restoring its ecosystem after the large-scale fires that occurred on August 23-24.

According to Ivan Rusev, the ecosystem of the park is gradually recovering, although it has suffered large-scale losses. Reed beds are the first to recover on the territory of the Tuzly Estuaries.

EcoPolitics also wrote that on September 14, drivers noticed fields burning near Dobropark, along the Zhytomyr highway near Kyiv. Videos taken from the windows of cars show black smoke drifting along the Zhytomyr highway. The fires in the fields were probably caused by illegal burning of dead wood.
