In just one year, the wind power sector increased its generation capacity by 37 per cent

Renewable energy sources are becoming an increasingly significant segment of Ukraine’s energy sector. Indeed, the combined capacity of wind and solar power stations in Ukraine now exceeds 8.4 GW. Solar power continues to lead the way among clean energy sources.

This is evidenced by new data from the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

The wind power sector

As of now, the total capacity of all wind farms in the country stands at 1.115 GW. Over 37 per cent of this capacity was commissioned in the first half of 2026 alone. This comprises 70 wind farms with a total capacity of 414.8 MW.

Among the regions, the south leads the way in wind farm installation: Mykolaiv Oblast with over 400 MW of generation capacity and Odesa Oblast with over 200 MW.

Solar generation

Data from NPC “Ukrenergo” show that solar power stations with a total capacity of 7.3 GW are currently in operation in Ukraine. Of this, 5.4 GW is accounted for by producers, and 2.25 GW by active consumers.

The largest number of solar panels has been installed in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Their total capacity is 947 MW. Next come the Mykolaiv region with 782 MW and the Odesa region with 515 MW.

Trend towards energy storage

The sector for storing generated energy is developing rapidly. In Ukraine, it is still relatively "young", so the growth rate is tremendous. During 2025 alone, the total capacity of energy storage installations (ESI) increased more than 300 times. It now stands at 600 MW.

"This is an additional tool for balancing the power system and using energy produced by 'green' generation. By accumulating excess solar generation during the day, ESIs feed it back into the grid in the evening or morning during peak consumption periods," the Ministry of Energy explained.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in Ukraine the share of "green" energy in total power generation during 2025 was 11%.

Due to the systematic destruction of energy infrastructure carried out by Russia, the approach to installing solar power plants has changed. Increasingly, they are being installed for self-consumption and autonomy, not for sales under the "green" tariff. EcoPolitic covered which Ukrainian businesses have taken this route in a separate article.
