On Monday, 6 July, a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management will take place online. Two draft laws relating to food safety, as well as organisational matters, have been submitted for consideration.
This was announced on the committee’s website.
EU standards on food safety
Members of the Environment Committee are to submit their proposals on the documents that will bring Ukrainian legislation on food safety, veterinary and sanitary policy into line with relevant EU regulatory acts.
These are draft law No. 15058 “On the implementation of European Union legislation regarding the improvement of regulation in the areas of sanitary and phytosanitary measures” and draft law No. 15058-1 ‘On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Improvement of State Regulation in the Fields of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures’.
The documents provide for amendments to a number of existing legislative acts. These include the following laws:
"On Basic Principles and Requirements for Food Safety and Quality";
- "On Milk and Dairy Products";
- "On Consumer Information on Food Products";
- "On Animal By-Products Not Intended for Human Consumption";
- "On State Control of Compliance with Food, Feed, Animal By-Products, Animal Health, and Animal Welfare Legislation";
- "On Veterinary Medicine and Animal Welfare";
- "On Materials and Articles Intended for Contact with Food Products";
- "On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control Over the Placement of Genetically Modified Organisms and Products on the Market".
These legislative initiatives correspond to Ukraine's EU integration efforts under negotiation chapter 12, “Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Policy”.
Additional issues
Parliamentarians will also consider a letter from the Ukrainian Ombudsman regarding the report "State and Functionality of Shelters in Ukraine. Monitoring Results of the Secretariat of the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights".
Additionally, a purely organizational matter will be put forward for discussion – staff-related issues of the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management.
At the previous meeting, the environmental committee recommended the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of draft laws in the fields of water supply and sewage, as well as forest reproductive resources.
