During the spring afforestation campaign in Ukraine, 92.5 million seedlings were planted. The work was carried out as part of forest restoration, afforestation and the replenishment of previously established forest stands.
This was reported by the State Agency for Forest Resources of Ukraine.
In terms of the area planted, the target was exceeded — the forest restoration campaign covered 13,000 hectares, representing 112 per cent of the planned work.
New forests
In addition to maintaining existing forest stands, new ones were created in areas where there were previously none.
The target for the spring was to plant 161 hectares of such areas. However, this figure was increased by 41 per cent to 227.6 hectares.
Regional leaders
As is traditional, the largest area of restored forests was in the northern regions of Ukraine. The top five regions are as follows:
Zhytomyr Region – 2,541 ha;
- Rivne Region – 2,309 ha;
- Volyn Region – 1,598 ha;
- Chernihiv Region – 1,089 ha;
- Kyiv Region – 879 ha.
“The work on reforestation does not end here – we will resume it in the autumn as part of the autumn reforestation campaign. After all, this is an investment in environmental security, the preservation of biodiversity, and the foundation for sustainable development and the resilience of the country’s natural resources,” summarized Viktor Smal, Head of the State Agency of Forest Resources.
EcoPolitic previously reported that in Kirovohrad Region, the first national park of the region, “Chornyi Lis” (“Black Forest”), will be created. A protected status will be granted to 12,800 ha of broad-leaved forests.
