Solar energy remains the undisputed leader in clean energy generation

In the overall energy production structure, renewable energy sources (RES) accounted for 11% of Ukraine's generation in 2025. With the commissioning of new facilities, the share of RES generating capacity in distributed generation increased to 20.4%.

This was reported by the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC).

“Household” driver for RES

A significant increase in "green" energy capacity is being driven by individual citizens. During the past year, 748 MW of capacity were commissioned in private households.

Structure of green generation

According to NEURC, the share of various types of RES in total clean energy generation is as follows:

  • 78% – solar power plants;
  • 12% – wind power plants;
  • 8% – biogas and biomass generation;
  • 2% – small hydropower plants.

Support for clean energy producers

The Commission emphasized that market-based support mechanisms for the industry are developing in Ukraine.

During 2025, another 101 generating installations switched to the market premium mechanism. Their total capacity reached 658 MW, which is 40% higher than the volume in the previous year, 2024.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in 2025, Ukraine added 1.5 GW of solar generation and 324 MW of wind generation.

A new law regulating the market for green energy has also come into force. It has extended the auction period until 2034 and introduced a one-sided market premium mechanism instead of a contract for difference.

It should be recalled that due to dry and clear weather, Ukrainians were urged to use power-intensive electrical appliances during daytime hours because of excess solar generation.
