Sweden has commissioned the country's largest solar power plant, covering an area equivalent to 185 American football fields.

This was reported by Interesting Engineering.

Paris-based Neoen, a global leader in renewable energy, together with Alight, a leading European solar energy developer, announced the commissioning and full-scale launch of the Hultsfred solar farm in Sweden.

Experts have launched the largest utility-scale solar power plant in the Scandinavian country, which is expected to generate 100 GW/h of green energy per year.

The power plant covers an area of approximately 130 hectares. It is estimated to provide electricity to more than 18,000 average Swedish households.

The solar farm, located at Hultsfred Airport in Småland County, has 174,000 low-carbon photovoltaic (PV) panels installed around the runway. Experts report that its peak capacity is 100 MW.

Importantly, the solar installation was built using low-carbon photovoltaic panels placed around the runway at Hultsfred Airport.

During construction, the solar power plant created up to 120 jobs, including sponsoring a sports club for children in neighboring villages.

Neoen Group CEO Xavier announced that the company has invested nearly $235 million in green energy projects since 2020.

We would like to remind EcoPolitics readers that in June, solar energy became the main source of energy in EU countries for the first time, surpassing nuclear energy.

In June, solar energy accounted for about 22% of total energy production, ahead of any other source. Nuclear energy ranked second with about 21.5%, and wind energy ranked third with almost 16% of total energy generation.
