Experts did not find any excess of pollutants in the air

There is currently no open fire at the solid waste landfill in Zhytomyr, but the landfill continues to smolder.

This is the most recent message from the Zhytomyr City Council on Telegram regarding this incident. It is dated May 3.

The next day, the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Zhytomyr Oblast reported that the firefighting at the landfill in Zhytomyr was still ongoing.

Emergency workers worked at the landfill continuously day and night. They used 11 vehicles and 31 rescuers to fight the fire. According to firefighters, the work was complicated by the large area of the fire and the depth of the smoldering.

On May 3, specialists of the Zhytomyr Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, together with the head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Zhytomyr City Council, collected and examined atmospheric air samples in 4 locations in the city

  • 24 Druzhby St. (on the border of the sanitary protection zone of the landfill)
  • 2 Rivniy lane (near the regional perinatal center);
  • Castle Hill;
  • 10 Poleva Square.

Experts analyzed air pollution by the following harmful substances

  • sulfur dioxide
  • nitrogen dioxide
  • carbon monoxide;
  • dust.

According to the results of the research, they did not find any excess of the maximum permissible concentrations of these pollutants.

On the evening of May 1, a fire broke out at a solid waste landfill in Zhytomyr. As of 6:00 am, firefighters managed to localize it.
