Europe added 12 GW of energy storage systems in 2024

Forecasts for the development of this area are very optimistic

Last year was a record year for the installation of energy storage systems in Europe: 11.9 GW were deployed across all scales and technologies, bringing the total installations to 89 GW.

These figures are presented in the ninth annual edition of the European Market Monitoring of Energy Storage Systems (EMMES) by the European Association of Energy Storage (EASE) and the research and consulting company LCP Delta.

It is noted that out of the total volume of 89 GW, the vast majority – 53 GW – is accounted for by pumped storage power plants.

In the solar power plant (SPP) segment, Italy added 1.6 GW in 2024 thanks to projects in the capacity market, followed by the UK with 1.3 GW.

For the second year in a row, more than a million European homes have installed battery storage, usually in conjunction with SPPs. Despite the slowdown, Germany and Italy remain the leading markets for home storage systems, with 510,000 new installations in Germany in 2024, despite a 10% drop. The market for commercial and industrial battery systems grew by about 28%.

The report also forecasts further rapid growth in the storage industry through 2030, driven by technological advances, policy support, and other key factors. It is expected that by 2030, another 128 GW of electrochemical storage will be added to European grids.

Recently, EcoPolitic reported that Poland is starting to build Europe's largest energy storage facility.
