Now the forestry season will last all year

In Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, foresters of the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” are revising their work schedule to adapt to rapid climate change.

They announced this on the official Telegram channel of the state enterprise.

Foresters say that instead of winter in the South, the forest now has one season – fall/spring, which lasts from October to early April. The other 6 months are dominated by hot and dry climatic summers. That's why the specialists decided to carry out the silvicultural campaign without a break for the “winter vacation”.

They also said that they are additionally forced to adapt to the shortage of personnel, which forces them to mechanize forestry technologies. Foresters suggest that under the new realities, it is more expedient to sow seeds directly on the plots, without using nurseries, as they used to do before. There are two reasons for this:

  • in conditions of extreme drought, the survival rate of seedlings during transplant is reduced;
  • Work on the movement of seedlings and their planting require considerable labor costs.

Foresters have also reported that since February, the Southern Forest Office has launched an experimental landing program. On the trial area of several hectares, foresters sit the seeds of the Crimean and pine pine with the addition of a moisture caps. This material – moisture holder – is introduced into the soil, absorbs and retains water and nutrients, which will allow the seedlings to successfully survive dry and hot weather in summer.

In the fall, foresters plan to add oak seeds to coniferous crops to make the breed composition of the future forest mixed. So the plantations will be more resistant to fires and drought.

The SE "Forests of Ukraine" assured that if the experiment is successful, in a year they will increase the area of afforestation with the new method.

Earlier, EcoPolitic told that, according to public activists, almost 3 years The State Forest Agency does not fund The only National Park in the Luhansk region.
