EcoPolitic journalists have collected for their readers 6 most significant cases of environmental damage that became known during the week of November 23-29. Information about them was published by the press services of prosecutors' offices and units of the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine.
1. The Ecology Production Cooperative, which disposes of solid waste at a landfill near the village of Abrikosove in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district of Odesa region, must pay more than UAH 11.3 million in damages to the state budget for land pollution. This decision was made by the Commercial Court of Odesa Oblast. The company failed to equip its landfill with a leachate extraction and disposal system and refused to voluntarily compensate for the damage caused.
2. Eco-inspectors of the Polissky District calculated the damages in the amount 8 million 463 thousand UAH for the death of aquatic biological resources on Lake Kozuba on the territory of the "Zelenbud" KP in Zhytomyr.
3. The Pishchan village council received a claim from the Central District ecoinspection for an unauthorized landfill on the territory of the village. Nedogarky of Kremenchug district. Specialists calculated the damage in the amount of almost 7 million hryvnias .
4. The State Inspectorate of Polissky District discovered the illegal felling of approximately 4 hectares of trees in the vicinity of the village. An invention of the Pulyn community of Zhytomyr region. Eco-inspectors found out that the felled areas are privately owned and partially leased. They called the investigative and operational team of the police to the place. Criminal proceedings have been opened.
5. The Cherkasy District Prosecutor's Office went to court to recover environmental damages from one of the village councils in Cherkasy district. The head of the council failed to comply with the order of environmental inspectors and did not eliminate an unauthorized landfill of 1.5 hectares on the territory under his jurisdiction. The total amount of damage caused by land contamination and pollution is over UAH 1.6 million.
6. Two residents of Kamianets district, Ternopil region, will be tried for illegal fishing, including for Red Book species. In April of this year, during the spawning season, the defendants caught almost 600 fish and 55 crayfish from the Zharnivka River without permits. They caused damage worth almost UAH 1.3 million to the fishery of Ukraine.
