During 2023, the air was heavily polluted for about 2 weeks

In Kyiv, for 87% of the time in 2023, or about 10.5 months, the air quality index, and thus the level of pollution, was low or very low.

Throughout the year, the air bone monitoring system systematically recorded exceedances of ground-level ozone and hydrogen sulfide, Oleksandr Voznyi, head of the Kyiv City State Administration's Department of Ecology and Natural Resources, reports on Facebook.

He said that experts are currently collecting and studying data on air pollution by these substances. This will help develop a program to improve air quality in Kyiv.

Voznyi emphasized that in 2023, monitoring stations recorded

  • the average level of air pollution during the year is 11.2%;
  • high – within 1.2%;
  • very high – within 0.2%.

"Considering that we are talking about a metropolis in which there are almost 1 million cars on the roads every day, the overall results of the city's monitoring system for the past year are encouraging," he added.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that four cities in the Kyiv region, namely Bila Tserkva, Kyiv, Ukrainka, and Brovary, were included in the TOP-10 cities of Ukraine with exceeding maximum permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide in the first half of 2023.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, an analysis of data from the available air monitoring stations showed that in 2022, 88% of the time, i.e. about 10.5 months, the overall air quality index in Kyiv was low and very low.
