The maximum single concentration of dust exceeded the permissible norms by 4.8 times

In Kryvyi Rih, the Air Pollution Index (API) was 7.43 in 2023, down 15% from 8.77 in 2022 and 38% from 12.13 in 2021.

The Air Pollution Observation Laboratory recorded a 1.33-fold increase in average annual dust concentrations and a 3.33-fold increase in formaldehyde concentrations, the Ecology Department of the Executive Committee of the Kryvyi Rih City Council reported on Facebook.

The report emphasized that the average annual concentrations of nitrogen oxide decreased by 50%, dust – by 33%, and formaldehyde – by 9%. The concentrations of sulfur dioxide also increased, but they did not exceed the normal limit.

It is noted that air quality monitoring was carried out at 5 stationary posts, namely in:

  • Metallurgical district – PSZ No. 1 and PSZ No. 2;
  • In the Central City District – PSZ No. 3;
  • Ingulets district – PSZ No. 6;
  • Dovhyntsivskyi District – PSZ No. 7.

In the message, it was said that exceeding the maximum permissible maximum one-time concentrations was recorded at the stations for:

  • dust – 4.8 times;
  • nitrogen dioxide – 1.25 times;
  • formaldehyde – 1.26 times.

The maximum concentrations of carbon monoxide and phenol were equal to the norm.

"The largest amount of pollutants that exceeded the maximum single concentration in 2023 was recorded at PSZ #1 and PSZ #2, which are located in the Metallurgical District of the city," the message says.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Kryvyi Rih in 2022, the volume of pollutant emissions into the atmospheric air reached 65.8 thousand tons, which is by 71% less than in 2021.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in May 2023 Kryvyi Rih enterprises were obliged to carry out complex dust suppression measures in residential areas located in the zone of influence of their production activities.
