The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources has developed drafts of new standards for monitoring, quantifying, and reporting greenhouse gas emissions that will help launch an emissions trading system.

A public discussion of the projects has begun, the Ministry of Environment reports.

The press service explained that the newly revised standards are important for the accreditation of greenhouse gas verification bodies.

"The current standards of 2013 are outdated and do not comply with EU legislation. Their update is key to the implementation in Ukraine of the EU Directive on the system of trading quotas for greenhouse gas emissions," the message says.

It is noted that the Ministry of Environment together with the EU4Climate project has developed four documents regarding new standards, namely :

  • Greenhouse gases. Part 1. Requirements and guidelines for quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions and removals at the organization level;
  • Greenhouse gases. Part 2. Requirements and guidelines for quantification, monitoring and reporting of reductions in emissions or increases in removals of greenhouse gases at the project level;
  • Greenhouse gases. Part 3. Requirements and guidelines for validation and verification of greenhouse gas claims;
  • General principles and requirements for validation and verification of environmental information.

Proposals for documents can be sent until February 25 to the e-mail address: tc82.environmental@gmail.com.

Earlier, Ecoolitic wrote, that Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strilets once again stated that in 2025, Ukraine will launch a emissions trading system in test mode, and in 2026 – in a full-fledged one. However, in the eco-community, such terms are considered unrealistic.

Previously, EcoPolitic spoke with the coordinator of the Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Development Committee of the European Business Association Olga Boyko about whether whether Ukraine is ready for the launch of ETS.
