ArcelorMittal caused 88% of air emissions in Kryvyi Rih during the year

The comprehensive index of air pollution in Kryvyi Rih was 8.77

In Kryvyi Rih, in 2022, the volume of pollutant emissions into the atmospheric air reached 65.8 thousand tons, which is 71% less than in 2021.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih PJSC became the biggest polluter, accounting for 88.5% of the total volume of emissions, the Department of Ecology of the Executive Committee of the Kryvyi Rih City Council reports on Facebook.

The report emphasized that in 2022, the volume of production of the city's mining and metallurgical enterprises decreased by 62%.

The biggest air pollutants were:

  • PJSC ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih – 88.5%;
  • PLLC CGOK (Central Mining and Processing Plant) – 3.3%;
  • Kryvyi Rih Cement PJSC – 2.7%;
  • PLLC PIVNGOK (Northern Mining and Processing Plant) – 2.4%;
  • other enterprises – 3.1%.

According to the data of the atmospheric air monitoring laboratory in Kryvyi Rih in 2022 compared to 2021, the average annual concentrations decreased:

  • dust – by 25%;
  • formaldehyde – by 21%;
  • carbon monoxide – by 50%;
  • hydrogen sulfide – by 50%;
  • nitrogen dioxide – by 40%.

The report emphasized that the values ​​of average annual concentrations exceeded the maximum permissible limits for dust by 2 times, and for formaldehyde by 3.7 times.

"The comprehensive characteristics of atmospheric air pollution as a whole is assessed by the air pollution index, which in our city in 2022 was 8.77, which is 38% less than in 2021 and 38% less than in the base year of 2015," the authors noted.

They added that the complex air pollution index in Dnipro is 11.9, in Kamiansk – 12.8.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Kryvyi Rih in 2022 the volumes of education industrial waste decreased by 60%, and placement volumes – by 67% due to the decline in production during the war.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih PJSC in Kryvyi Rih closed two obsolete coke batteries No. 1 and No. 2, which will allow to reduce the volume of pollutant emissions from coke chemical production by a third.
