In 2007, the beech primeval forests of the Ukrainian and Slovak Carpathians were the first to be included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage.

The National Commission for UNESCO was offered to consider the possibility of adding a new serial transnational object "Primitive forests and ancient coniferous upper mountain forests of the Carpathians" to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Such a proposal was submitted by Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection Ruslan Grechanyk and Director of the Department of Nature Reserve Fund and Biodiversity Eduard Arustamyan, the Ministry of Environment reports in Telegram.

The message explained that the creation of such an object will work in synergy with the Biodiversity Preservation Strategy until 2030 "Returning nature to our lives". The strategy includes a clear commitment to ensure strict legal protection of all primary and ancient forests in the EU, as well as the EU Forestry Strategy 2030. This EU Strategy stipulates that all surviving primary and old forests should be under strict legal protection.

It is noted that the current state of affairs in the UNESCO Sectors was discussed at the meeting and their staff members were approved. Among other things, the staff of the Natural Heritage Sector was also approved.

"One of the priorities of the Sector's work will be to attract assistance within the framework of the Sectoral Support Program and establish international cooperation for the development of biosphere reserves of Ukraine," the press service emphasized.

The authors emphasized that in 2007, the beech primeval forests of the Ukrainian and Slovak Carpathians were the first to be included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage. Later, the ancient beech forests of Germany got there, and in 2017 another 63 plots from ten European countries.

"Thanks to this, the transnational serial object "Primitive beech forests and ancient forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe" was formed, which contains 78 constituent parts of 12 countries of Europe. It is important to note that with 92 thousand hectares of natural heritage, a third or 29 thousands of hectares are Ukrainian primeval forests," they said.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote ,that the defenders of the Svydovetsky massif filed a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court to stop the construction of a mega ski resort.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Transcarpathia, in the Uzhgorod forest farm, due to careless handling of the fire on Mount Savchyn, a fire destroyed more than 90 hectares of forest.
