Engineers believe that the dam of the Kyiv Reservoir can collapse only in the case of a direct hit by an atomic bomb or a meteorite

Ecologist Vasyl Kredo said that the Kyiv hydro power plant (HPP) is one of the most dangerous facilities on Earth, because its destruction threatens 6 districts of the city and dozens of other settlements.

However, Oleg Popenko, former adviser to the deputy mayor of the KMDA, noted that the dam has three levels of protection, and its destruction will not have such apocalypti" consequences, reports Comments Kyiv.

Even at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, russian troops already tried to damage the dam of the Kyiv Reservoir, but the successful work of air defense prevented the destruction.

Credo noted that the HPP is 93% emergency.

He also said that according to the approximate scenario of the development of events after the destruction of the dam, the Obolonsky district will take the first blow, which will be covered by a 4-meter wave 3 minutes after the accident. In another 2 minutes, the water will reach Troeshchyna, in 10 – Podil, in 15 – it will flood Rusanivka. Almost 30 cities, hundreds of towns and villages will be at risk of flooding.

"I also met other opinions from experts on emergency situations, who spoke about less apocalyptic scenarios. The wave will pass gradually, the destruction of the dam is impossible immediately, and the time for the water to rise is measured in several days. But I definitely understand that public awareness work is definitely now it is needed. Because someone wants to read such an environmentalist," Popenko said.

He urged not to take Credo's statements as truth, because the Kyiv dam has three degrees of protection:

  • concrete dam;
  • drainage channel, through which water seeps through filtration channels;
  • earth dam

It was noted in the material that the concrete part of the protective structures was built taking into account a possible earthquake with a force of 7 points. About 400 sensors record all changes to prevent man-made accidents.

"Engineers believe that the dam of the Kyiv Reservoir can collapse only in the event of a direct hit by an atomic bomb or a meteorite with a diameter of 100 meters," the authors added.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that on September 14, russian troops bombarded the city of Kryvyi Rih with 8 Kinzhal and Iskander cruise missiles, which damaged the dam of the Karachuny reservoir.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets said that the destruction of the Irpin dam caused enormous damage for the environment and settlements.
