Experts pointed gaps in the work of an important procedure of the EIA
Valentina Bokii

There are several main remarks to the procedure

The Environmental Impact Assessment procedure in Ukraine does not achieve the goals declared in the law — reducing the impact on the environment, and the funds for its implementation are spent inefficiently.

This was the conclusion made by the participants of the round table EIA: performance studies and necessary changes , which took place on the initiative of PAEU and with the participation of state authorities, business, public and expert community.

"For the purpose of objectivity and transparency in the issue of ATS, the Union of Environmental Professionals PAEU appealed to the Ministry of Environment, SEI and State regulatory service to provide reports on tracking the effectiveness of the Law of Ukraine about EIA. So far, has the law about EIA in Ukraine achieved its declared goals ? Participants answered almost unanimously that the goal was not achieved, time and money were spent inefficiently!" PAEU reported.

In more detail, the results of the study on the effectiveness of the Environmental Impact Assessment procedure in Ukraine can be viewed at link.

The main comments on the procedure related to: the timing of its implementation, non-compliance with EU directives, the lack of proper monitoring of the effectiveness of the procedure, as well as its corruption component.

"Soon, the organizers promise to provide the legislative and executive authorities with elaborate proposals and a road map," PAEU added.

As Ecopolitic reported earlier, on June 16, Ukraine with certain restrictions resumed the work of the Register of Internal Affairs and Communications, which will allow business to continue the procedure, and the public to participate in decision-making.
