Local authorities do not respond to citizens' appeals

In the Kharkiv region of Zmiyiv, sewage from sewage treatment plants in large quantities flows into the Mzha River, a tributary of the Siverskyi Donets, which could trigger an environmental disaster.

Water from the collector flows directly into the river, and a layer of gray sediment has already formed on its coast and floodplain, activist Artem Prykhodko wrote on Facebook.

He said that the sewage treatment plant is on the balance sheet of the Zmiyiv-Service utility company. However, they do not fulfill their function and local residents have been complaining about a strong unpleasant odor for years.

"Local residents suffer from the terrible stench caused by this situation. An entire neighborhood of the city has been suffering from this problem for years, and it is hard to imagine the consequences for nature and animals," Prykhodko wrote.

According to him, the local authorities do not respond to citizens' appeals and the threat of environmental disaster. Local eco-activist Volodymyr Moiseev has already appealed to the police and plans to continue to contact all relevant authorities to stop the pollution.

Earlier EcoPolitic wrote, that in July 2023 near Kharkov in the Udy River 2,189 fish and 5 ducks died. The water in the river became cloudy with an unpleasant smell, and oily stains were found in the places where the dead fish accumulated.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, residents of Kryvyi Rih complained about the periodic pollution of the Saksagan river with sewage runoff from a well in the Terniv district and the spread of an unpleasant smell near residential buildings.
