Share of RES in heating and cooling systems in the EU

The EU is planning an acceleration in the renewable heat sector. According to the RED II directive 2018-2001 of the European Parliament and the Council, it is planned to increase the share of renewable energy in heat supply and cooling by an average of 1.3% per year until 2030. More than 75% of this growth should occur in district heating (DH) systems. That is, in 2030, the share of RES in heating and cooling systems should be more than 36%. To ensure this growth, the directive obliges DH system operators to connect heat suppliers from RES or waste heat from independent producers based on non-discriminatory criteria. Refusal to connect and purchase heat from RES is possible in three cases.
