Landfill reclamation in Velikie Gribovichi is the most important project for Lviv

In Lviv, on May 21, a biogas power plant was launched at the Gribovichi landfill for municipal solid waste (MSW), which will produce more than 800 thousand cubic meters. m of gas per year.

This will provide energy for about 735 families, Green City reports on Facebook.

The facility was built as part of a joint project between NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine and the Clear Energy group of companies.

“I consider it very important that even in such difficult conditions of the war, we still continue to develop and implement such projects. Thanks to the biogas power plant, 38 hectares of landfill, emitting millions of cubic meters of harmful landfill gas, will become a source of energy for the surrounding households,” said the Chairman of the Board NJSC "Naftogaz of Ukraine" Yuriy Vitrenko.

The material explained that landfill gas is formed during the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste residues, that is, without air access, and is one of the causes of fires and explosions in landfills. The technology will not only reduce methane emissions, but the associated emissions of volatile organic compounds and other air pollutants.

Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovoy noted that the reclamation of the landfill in Velikie Gribovichi is an extremely important project for Lviv.

"We are implementing it thanks to the support of European banks. It is part of a comprehensive plan for solving the problem with waste in Lviv. Technical reclamation is currently ongoing, which includes the construction of a system for collecting, treating and utilizing landfill gas with the generation of electrical energy. I am convinced that the opening biogas power plant and working in synergy with Naftogaz and Clear Energy will be a new step in this important matter,” says Sadovoy.

The station is equipped with Austrian Jenbacher equipment used in biogas projects throughout Europe.

Piotr Bagriy, co-founder and chairman of the Supervisory Board of Clear Energy Group, explained that the station will produce 2,645 thousand kWh per year, which will save more than 800 thousand cubic meters of natural gas.

"This makes it possible to provide "green" electricity to about 735 households and at the same time reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere in the amount of about 30,000 tons per year," he said.

Biogas collection is carried out with the help of wells, which are evenly located throughout the body of the landfill, and a system for collecting surface gases.

Recall in a landfill in Lviv continues landfill degassing

As EcoPolicy reported earlier, in Lviv, residents and guests of the city were asked produce less waste.
